Disc Herniation Treatment
A herniated disc occurs when the soft inner nucleus of an intervertebral disc pushes through a tear in the outer annulus fibrosus, irritating nearby nerves. This can cause sharp radiating pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness in the arms or legs depending on the affected level.
Symptoms & Common Presentation
The symptoms of a herniated disc vary depending on the location and severity of the herniation and whether the disc is pressing on a nearby nerve root. Many people experience:
- Localized neck or lower-back pain, depending on the affected level of the spine
- Pain that radiates into an arm or leg when a nerve root is compressed (often described as sciatica when it travels down the leg)
- Numbness, tingling, or a “pins-and-needles” sensation along the path of the affected nerve
- Muscle weakness in the affected arm or leg
- Pain that worsens with sitting, bending, lifting, coughing, or sneezing
- Stiffness and reduced range of motion in the spine
Some herniated discs cause little or no pain, while others produce significant discomfort. Symptoms such as progressive weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness in the saddle area require urgent medical attention.
How We Evaluate Disc Herniation
An accurate diagnosis guides effective, conservative care. Your evaluation typically begins with a detailed history of your symptoms and a thorough physical and neurological examination — including tests of strength, reflexes, sensation, and nerve tension such as the straight-leg-raise test. When clinically indicated, we review any existing imaging or coordinate an appropriate referral for MRI or X-ray. We also assess how you move and load your spine to identify contributing biomechanical patterns, so care addresses the source of your symptoms rather than the pain alone.
How We Treat Herniated Discs
Our approach to disc herniation is non-surgical and root-cause focused. We combine spinal decompression (VAX-D), chiropractic adjustment, DNS-based movement rehabilitation, Active Release Technique (ART), and targeted physical therapy to reduce nerve compression, restore disc health, and rebuild spinal stability.
What to Expect
Treatment begins with a comprehensive assessment to identify the herniation level, degree of nerve involvement, and contributing movement dysfunctions. From there, a structured plan is built around your presentation — not a generic protocol.
Related Services
Disc-related pain often responds well to a combination of non-surgical, movement-based therapies. Depending on your presentation and which location is most convenient, your care plan may draw on:

- Chiropractic Care — available across our locations
- Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization (DNS) — available at our Manhattan location
- Sport Rehabilitation
- Physical Therapy
Service availability varies by location. We’ll recommend the combination best suited to your condition and goals.
